quick question on flying with reloading components

Postby 45Badger on Fri Jun 21, 2013 8:50 am

Specifically projectiles. I'm in Chicago and have 500 pieces of .223 bullets that I want to bring back to MN. I'm not checking luggage. Anybody know if I can bring them in my carry-on bag? Anybody done this?

I don't want to get to airport and have $100 in bullets confiscated.

Some interesting back and forth on the topic here:

http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=407478

.. I'd put them in a $5 USPS flat rate priority mail box and ship them home, but that's just me. Seems like the regulations are written in such a way that they are open to interpretation and someone who doesn't know better seeing the word "bullets" on a parcel in your carry-on bag is likely to freak the F out.

Can't bring firearm or ammo or components for either in Carry On baggage. Check the bag or ship flat rate USPS back home.

If its just the bullets, they're not hazmat.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

There's a whole thread discussing the issue linked above... clueless TSA agents can still ruin your day. Technically someone who understands the difference between a "bullet" and "ammunition" gets that a bullet is just an inert chunk of copper and lead would likely get that a box of bullets is as harmless as a ream of paper... however a TSA gate agent who knows nothing about shooting/firearms making $12 an hour likely does not and is going to take keen interest in that box that says "bullets, qty 500" in your carry-on.

Add to this that he's flying out of the CHICAGO airport and I'd figure best case it's going to involve a delay/confrontation at the checkpoint, or worst confiscation of the bullets and complicated local PD involvement. I can see the anti's wet-dream headlines headlines now.. "man attempts to board plane full of nun's and orphans with 500 bullets designed for the baby slaying AR-15 assault rifle in his carry-on bag!"

Say they are copper coated supposetories, offer one to anyone who questions it as a "free sample".

Or ship...yes...I'd ship.
