What are Trump/the Republicans going to do for gun rights?

Postby Lumpy on Mon Nov 11, 2024 6:22 pm

What if anything can gun owners lobby a Republican administration to do to actually further gun rights? Trump himself, as pointed out by two notable members of this board, was no particular friend of the 2nd Amendment, and Congress wasn't much better. We did get conservative judges and justices, to which we owe virtually every inch of success we saw, but otherwise the first Trump administration was a nothing sandwich as far as true progress went. Are we going to see any rollback of the more egregious infringements on gun rights— the probably unconstitutional Hughes amendment to the FOPA, the insane suppressor and short-barreled rifle provisions of the NFA, or any of the heavy regulatory burdens the 1968 GCA imposed. I'm tired of just not losing yet more ground; I want to see ground gained back.

Trump can only do what the 2 branches directly under him send him to sign into law. He could do Presidential edicts but those can be undone with the next person who becomes president. Law would be best. That means you and I will need to be involved at the state and federal levels letting our representatives know that we are watching them and there voting records. This includes Trump.

He can reverse Biden's unconstitutional executive orders.

Then please don’t use terms like “notable members” for left wing troll plants. He caved on bump stocks I get it.

Yes, it would be awesome to a roll back of NFA on suppressors. Considering what European countries do for them, it should be feasible as a hearing safety bill.

"...a roll back of NFA on suppressors..."

That would be a very reasonable goal.
Like it or not, we will never likely see the end of the NFA, or Class 3 designations on firearms.
But devices no more complex, or hazardous than a lawnmower muffler are different thing.

No reason one should not be able buy one at a hardware store, or build one on your own....

Probably nothing.

We'll get conservative, fairly Pro-2A judges on the whole.

Beyond that, likely nothing.

So perhaps the question is, what can people working for the Republican Party do to advance the pro-gun agenda within the party? What might people at the precinct caucus level, or functionaries within the Party apparatus do to lobby the issue? The leadership knows full well that they've got the pro-gun vote sewed up and realistically there's nowhere they can defect to. So how do we get the 'Pubs to care more about the gun owners than the swing voters who might be alienated by a pro-2nd Amendment stance?

Trump isn’t going to deliberately do anything for or against in my opinion. That made him the lesser evil there as I am pretty sure Harris would have advanced some sort of “common sense gun control” that would just be control.

The place to make changes is in congress.

Too bad but Klobuchar isn’t going to advance anything. Depending on your place of residence maybe you can convince your representative to introduce something.

Minnesota overall has pretty hands off gun laws… yes the handgun/military style law is an issue for under 21, but 3 years isn’t horribly long to wait (why not advocate driving younger… they already let farm kids get theirs at 15) and it makes some sense legally.

Our bigger issue is stomping down new infringement at the state level. Anything new you can pass, they can repeal.

You'll need to push on your federal representatives. Make it clear to them through political power what you want done or you'll find a candidate or will beat them in 2026.

That's how you effect change -- they don't care about anything else.

But I thought Trump had an anti-gun agenda.

Bring back the Hearing Protection Act and National Reciprocity that Paul Ryan killed. If I'm not mistaken, Trump has said he would like to do that at rally speeches.

This would be nice but it probably conflicts with his tee time.

I guarantee Trump will get more official business done on the golf course than Biden did sleeping on the beach

Pretty good portrayal of his presidency:
