1911 ?

Postby Bearcatrp on Sun Mar 21, 2021 3:51 pm

Is ruger a good 1911? Got a hard on for a full size 1911 in 10MM. Since I already have 40 S&W bullets, which works for 10MM, contemplating a 1911. Brass would be the only thing I would have to find. Would be nice to find a full size 1911 for 40 S&W but only thing out there is a SA EMP, which is out of stock everywhere.

No problem with a Ruger in the 1911 platform.

I don't have a S&W 10mm in a 1911- do have a couple older ones (1006, 1076, 1086)

However, I do have a number of other ones in a 1911 format. (Colt, SVI, and a Clark custom)

If you get it and have issues with finding ammo-

The S&W had (the ones I saw) an external extractor, so its more likely it will work like mine have...

Try shooting .40S&W in it. Odds are pretty good it will work just fine. The biggest problem tends to be that they have some feeding issues with short bullet (HP) loads. If you handload the .40, load them a bit long (1.175 or so) and I have had no issues at all. Essentially its like shooting .38SPL in a .357- lower pressure cartridge, shorter round, less recoil, etc.

The semiautos supposedly headspace on the case mouth. I wouldn't drop a round in the chamber and then drop the slide and expect it to work well- but for the most part, the extractor tends to hold the round on the breach face well enough that they function fine from the magazine- you just really have to scrub the chamber afterwards if you want to use the full house 10mm in it. Also, if it doesn't go off when you pull the trigger, you have to check to make sure that there is nothing else there, like normal (but 2 .40 rounds don't fit...)

Just realized I misread and thought you said S&W when you said Ruger...

probably still applies... but I am not up on the Rugers.

A couple years ago at the shooters roundup when the Ruger 10mm had just come out I shot both the Ruger 10mm and the Coonan 10mm. The Coonan was so much smoother and more comfortable. However no way to get a Coonan now and it was also twice the price. The Ruger was by no means a bad gun though and I almost bought one a while back.

FYI the Springfield Ronin is also available in 10mm and has a lower MSRP than the Ruger Target 10mm. Either will serve you well I am sure and both will probably be hard to find.

I may have some 10 mm brass. If you buy the 10 mm let me know, and I'll go through my brass to make sure I still have it.

Also, if you get the 1911 in 10 mm be sure to post a picture of it, so we can all drool on our screens

That Springfield Ronin looks nice. I have a XDM in 40 S&W currently. Nice pistol. I had a 10MM S&W a long time ago. Bought it when I was stationed at Ft Hood back in the late 80's. 10MM fizzled and ammo was had to find so sold it in 96. It was a heavy pistol. Doing a quick search last night on Ruger's 1911, OOS everywhere. Think I will source brass first before getting any 10MM. I do reload but haven't looked at powders needed for reloading it. Have a good amount of power pistol powder I use to reload 40 S&W and 9mm. Thanks for all the replies. BigDog, let me know if you or anyone else has any to sell, I will buy it. Thanks.

Just looked at Hodgdon reloading web site and see power pistol is not listed for 10MM. Will check other sources.

Looked at my Hornady reload book. Power pistol is listed but looks like blue dot is best. Did some checking around the web for brass. ZERO available, even AR15.com in EE section doesn't have any. This sucks.

Big 10mm surge has been brewing over the past couple of years, so add that to panic buying of 2020...

Good luck in your search, any 1911 buy is a good buy :)

If I ever come across a Ronin I will probably buy it. However now that you mention it I do not really have any appropriate powders myself.

This is good ammo too but I don’t think Federal makes it anymore:

Federal Premium Vital-Shok Pistol Ammunition P10T1, 10mm, Trophy Bond Jacketed Soft Point, 180 GR, 1275 FPS

I used to have a ruger sr1911 it was picky with mags, I have a rock island 1911 10mm seems decent haven't shot it much but will put more down range here soon.
Factory mag is garbage but I was able to find mecgar mags for a decent price.
