Thinking about a Ruger LCP, any recommendations?

Postby RangerTim on Wed Mar 13, 2013 11:59 am

I stopped by my local Fleet Supply last night and they have LCPs for $289 w/o the laser, or $349 w/ the laser. Does anyone own one and have any good things to say about it? I can't decide if I want a LCP, or if I should look around for something else. I've heard good reviews so far from the LCP. Plus, 380 is the one type of ammo that every gun store still has in stock for reasonable prices.

LCR or LCP? You mention .380, which would be for the LCP auto. The LCR is a double action only poly-framed revolver chambered in .38 special or .357 magnum. Both are excellent carry guns. The LCR's have one of the best DA triggers I have ever fired, and are comfortable to shoot with standard .38's, and quite a handful with .38+p, approaching uncomfortable with .357 mags. The LCP is pretty much the gold standard for pocket sized .380's.

Sorry, LCP you're right. Damn, they need to change those names haha.

If you're thinking LCP, get the Taurus TCP instead for several reasons:

Having owned and fired hundreds of rounds out of both the LCP and TCP, here's why:

* Just as reliable
* Last round slide lock back
* Shoots where you point it
* More comfortable to shoot
* Less expensive ($199)
* And it looks great!

Get the LCP. VERY accurate, better company behind the product IMO. Just my two cents.

Regarding what exactly?

Speaking from experience, having sent back an LCP and a TCP I can say there's no difference in that department, and both companies fixed the issue on their tab.

If you like Ruger better than Taurus, fine - but both the LCP and TCP have their quirks, you won't find many small pocket guns that don't.

I owned and carried an LCP for a little while, do not own it anymore. Just because I do not own it, does not mean I wouldn't recommend it. The LCP is an awesome gun if you are looking for a nice little pocket carry. I would recommend it to anyone looking to pocket carry. If not, get something a little bigger. I am thinking about trying out the pocket carry again for this summer. I am mowing over another LCP or a Kahr CW380(if I can find one soon).
If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster.

I have a LCP with laser and LC9 without and prefer the LC9. It shoots a lot better, not much bigger and ammo is affordable. Just my $.02

I have an LCP, and it's just the ticket for hot weather pocket carry. Mine has been completely reliable.

Regarding full product line quality, reputation for durability, and making products here instead of South America. I realize a lot of their products are now made here. I've never shot a TCP, so my opinion is limited I suppose....

One of the things that drove me to the LCP, was it's tiny, pocketable size. The SIG P238, PPK, and other larger .380s are not pocket guns for me.
If I've got to carry it on my belt, I'll carry a nine.

I understand, a lot of people don't care for Taurus and write them off completely. There are however a few that seem to do well, such as revolvers, 1911's, and the TCP.

The TCP is one of the US made Taurus guns, so maybe that's why. :D

You also get a free one year NRA membership with the purchase of any new Taurus (new or existing memberships qualify, existing members get a one year extension).

Just to clarify:
Not that it matters to most, but I'm not 'against' the LCP - once it came back from Ruger it was a reliable shooter, it just lacks what the TCP provides for less money without sacrificing reliability, in my experience. I also had to put money into the LCP (13# Wolff springs for example) so that the casings would stop landing on my head and it would chamber a round more reliably.

I've got an LCP as well as a P3AT.

Hands down, the LCP is the winner. In context, the LCP is much more comfortable to shoot. It also just "feels" like a better made gun to me. YMMV.

Haven't tried the Taurus mentioned, but would be open to it.
