I teach that for a normal contact like a traffic stop, if the permit holder isn't asked, it won't necessarily help to volunteer the info that they're carrying. Again, cops assume everyone is armed and possibly dangerous anyway.

If you are going to disclose, avoid saying things like, "I have a gun!"

The fear seems to be an officer at the side of the road accidentally seeing the otherwise-undisclosed firearm and having that lead to unpleasant surprises for everyone. I wouldn't normally disclose unless asked, but if armed at that particular time, I do wonder about the utility or wisdom of handing the handgun permit to him/her along with the driver's license.

One thing to consider... immediately after a defensive shooting, cops would likely have you make a full statement. That doesn't mean it is a good idea.

I think everyone needs to make their own choice on when to inform, but don't do it just because cops would prefer it. Also remember that most of the cops we talk to are pro-gun... That isn't always the case, just look at the recent gun control hearings.

Is it a worry, that if you disclose that you have a firearm, they will want it and put it on the hood or roof? Isn't the safest place for my firearm in my holster. Has this happened to anyone?

Our challenge as citizens carrying firearms is to determine a way to interact with the police in a manner that is least likely to make them nervous or piss them off. I'm sympathetic to the danger that LEOs face, but just following the law isn't always going to keep you from getting "extra attention" at one of these contacts. The problem I see is that the way one of these roadside contacts goes is going to vary from department to department, cop to cop, day to day, even beginning of shift to end of shift.

Yes, you can.

The officer will take your gun for "officer safety" anyway. And since he / she has it they'll likely run the serial #.

It's practically a "consent search" if you admit you have a gun on you.

At which time, you can ask for a sample signature to match to that which is on the permit for verification.
