New to the 10/22

Postby blacktornado11 on Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:51 pm

Alright gentlemen (and ladies). I took the dive and bought a 10/22 after being a Marlin man all my life, now I would like to know what you all think the necessary modifications are. I'm thinking: Better bolt stop/release, larger mag release, and a bigger charging handle. I already have 3 10 rounders for it :D

What do you all think? (Feel free to include part numbers and links if you have em' :) )

Thanks, James

polyurethane bolt buffer. Super cheap, super easy to install. Great upgrade, really quiets down the action.

VQ also makes some awesome and cheap trigger upgrade parts. Made a world of difference to mine.

Spend some significant time reading posts here: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9

And then, to heck with the VQ products. Instead, check out Rimfire Technologies. http://www.rimfiretechnologies.com/ruger_10_22_s/3.htm Get the hammer/sear kit to start, but plan to buy other items too. Amazing stuff, and the guy who owns/runs RT (Greg aka Skeeter) has got to be one of the most knowledgable folks on the planet when it comes to improving 10/22s.

Have fun. Let us know when you are compelled to buy your second 10/22.

Or the Tuffer Buffer...I just received mine last week and cost me $12.00 for 3 including shipping and no tax.

I added a buffer from Kidd, as well as their scalloped bolt and bolt return spring assembly. That thing cycles like a sewing machine now.

One other option is to have the bolt reworked by Que Boltworks. For about $50 he'll radius it, polish it, square the bolt face, set the headspace, and pin the firing pin. That also is an excellent upgrade.

Another worthwhile upgrade is sending the trigger group to Brimstone Gunsmithing and have him rework the trigger. Very cost effective...makes for a really excellent trigger and you can specify the pull weight. My favorite trigger upgrade, however, is the trigger upgrade kit from Kidd. IMHO, that upgrade kit is every bit as good as the Volquartsen trigger group I have in yet another of my 10-22's.

All I did was added the techsights and a sling.

Shoot it, shoot it, shoot it, then decide what you want to do with it. I've done an accuracy/show build and am currently working on a lightweight setup. The great thing about a 10/22 is you can make it be anything you want.

I would suggest that before you spend the money on a trigger upgrade that you go ahead and shoot a few hundred/thousand rounds to break in the stock parts first. You might find that you like the stock trigger. If not, then replace it.

If you're using irons, you need to get the tech-sights. IMO, the stock sights are terrible.

If I'm not mistaken, most, if not all of the new 10/22s come with the extended mag release.

The new style mag release with the weird little lever hanging down isn't too bad. The old button style is a pain.

Best upgrade? Hangout with somebody who drinks Heineken. Those mini keg cans hold up way better than standard cans.

I've been shopping for one also. I started looking at tacticool 22s, then I went back to teh standard knowing I could make it tacticool if I wanted.

My main question...is there good alternatives? My main concern is being able to get a 25rd mag, and something with some alternative stocks. But...I really want reliable. That's why I moved away from the 715 mossy.
