That would be an example of negligence. I work long shifts and I've never fallen asleep around children with my firearm accessible. In fact when I have company over I double check everything is secure.

I suppose it could be an accident if you had suffered from a medical condition like narcolepsy.

A guy I know hid a loaded pistol in his wardrobe. I was invited over to his house once and he had guests over who had a few kids who were running around unsupervised. I told the parents about the pistol and they didn't even seem to care. They were more interested in watching the football game than their children.

To hell with people like that.

We need to gun-proof our kids.
Hard to do in a society that thinks kids shouldn't ever see a gun, at least not before they turn 18...
But that's what we need to do, teach the kids from the time they are able to manipulate the trigger.
It's far easier to gun-proof the child, than to child-proof the gun.

Don't fix blame - No need to chastise or insult. Learn from this lesson and move on. Those close to this child, including the 'responsible' will never likely get that chance.

You slip on the water on the floor. Your gun comes out of the holster due to plastic fatigue, skips across the floor, and discharges, shooting a retaining bracket on the bathroom mirror. The mirror falls over onto your kid, breaks into a million pieces and impaling him multiple times. You go to prevent him from removing the shards so he doesn't bleed out, but in an attempt to restrain him you fall on top of him killing him with your weight.

The parents knowingly allowed kids to play in a room with a loaded firearm under the mattress. If they put plastic bags in a baby crib a lot of your would still be bemoaning it as an accidental tragedy.

Maybe we should educate little kids about the dangers of plastic bags too.

Wow, this just plain sucks I have 3 small children the primary reason I even own firearms is to protect them. I am looking at my 21 month old as I type this reply and I am damn near crying. If you have never fallen in love then married her/him had awesome passionate sex and been blown away with the overwhelming joyful news that you have co-created another human being and then at the hospital after waiting to meet your baby for 9 months you get to see the beauty your maker has intended you to see you hold the new life in your arms being ever so careful you don't squeeze to tightly. You bring your baby home and don't sleep because they need you all the time you feed them you care for them you proudly tell your friends and family all about their personality and you've fallen in love all over again. If you haven't experienced this how can you even begin to pretend you understand what this family is going through? I don't ever I mean ever want to have to bury any of my children! My thoughts and prayers will include this family this is a real tragedy.

heard some news from the family today - the parents are devistaed. the whole family is comming together and prety much taking shifts being with them and praying with them everyday to try and get everyone through. going to be a long, long road ahead to never get back to "normal" again....
