Hellz no. I haven't considered letting that one go.

Yet. :?

And Pat, I'd let you use the trapdoor..... but you might want to use something you can aim. :P

I think that a baited jar of tannerite would be fun. Wait for woodchuck to position him/herself over jar to eat bait.... hit jar with .30-06, turn woodchuck inside out into pulpy bloody mess.

I had, for 4 years, a woodchuck that lived under my shed - I think he moved in every year in early fall. I didn't have any issue with him, at the time, because he was the sole reason I didn't have to rake my back yard when the apples from the tree started to fall. In fact I have him on video sitting upright eating an apple like a human. Seated on the ground, Apple in hand........takes a bite, looks around very casually, takes another bite - repeat for an hour or so. Actually pretty funny to watch. You got the impression you could get away with sneaking up behind him and flicking his ears and he'd only be mildly annoyed and keep eating.

I mentioned at the time I didn't have a problem with him because he took care of the apples, well I noticed this spring that the rear corner of the shed is starting to drop. He must have burrowed under that corner enough that the soil is shifting and so is my shed. I'll have to jack it up, fill it in - level it and drop it back. Had I known, I would have placed my own headshot.

Old dog was pretty passive and could care less about the woodchuck - would half assed chase him when he saw it, but didn't care too much. I don't think the same results are possible with the new dog. He's an assasin. So back to raking apples for me.

Sorry I digress. Here's how I'd do it. For bait I'd recommend apples in a pile on the edge of the property. It may take some time to get him in the habit of going out to eat them, but eat them he will. Once he is trained and believes its safe, he'll relax and eat at his leisure. Lift the window on the cabin, aim rifle, squeeze off the shot and do your happy dance.

Good luck on your mission.

I use to shoot them out of the basement windows with CB shorts. Only a head shot will kill them with the shorts but that was never a problem. I used a Marlin 81TS with a 6-18x and a Harris Bipod. This should help with the flies, I'd hate to touch off an '06 inside!!

That idea, while intriguing, would spray woodchuck all over the exterior of said screen porch. Maybe if I combine the baiting idea, and edge of property ideas...

since you have a .30-06....

I would suggest a judicious amount of tannerite slide in at the end of a 10 foot pole then. I am thinking 10-20 lbs would suffice.

since someone has already annihilated the haybale.

Only problem is that the burrow goes under the screen porch. In-laws are kinda attached to the structure of their cabin and would prefer it wasn't demolished ala Caddyshack Golf Course.

There is a hose...

I have the 500 S&W Mosin I would offer up to do the job and some 500 grain max loads. I bet you could shoot him while he is still underground with it. The report and recoil is actually less then a 45-70. Even with a crummy shot I highly doubt the chuck will go anywhere.

We've had a few chucks up here over the years. When I haven't been around with either the .22 or the .22 Mag we've had decent luck with the live trap. Neighbor lady discovered one bait that worked well -- since the @#$!% was eating her flowers anyway, she snapped off a few buds and tossed them in the trap one evening - woke up to find the little SOB caught (and disposed of). I like the apple idea too.

I don't recommend sitting in the cab of your Nissan pickup parked near the hole with a Ruger Mark I and waiting for the little bugger to pop his head out -- well at least not unless you're smarter than me and wear earmuffs!  It was a successful strategy, but a little louder than I thought it was going to be!

Good luck!
