Local source for bulk Desiccant?

Postby Stradawhovious on Tue Jul 17, 2012 3:32 pm

I noticed that the humidity level in my precious Mosin Coffee Table is getting uncomfortably high. I don't want to run cords to the unit, so desiccant it is. What I'm using now isn't really working......

Anyone know any local (South Mpls ish) sources for bulk desiccant? I'm in too much of a hurry to order something online.

Thanks.

Charcoal is also used to reduce humidity in a pinch.that is what I used till I had a chance to order a bunch from Amazon

Cat litter (something with silica and clay) will work in a pinch and is awful cheap to buy in quantity.

My dad was a machinist/tool and die/supervisor and he got all his from the shop, they'd send big bags of it along with machining parts. Check someplace like that? Or drive up here and grab one of mine until you find another.

I stopped at the HomeDepot and talked with one of the very gun friendly associates, and he pointed me towards a product called "Damp Rid". Looks like it will do the trick, and was easily cheap enough to take a gamble on. I will keep you posted as to how it works. Looks like the product is mostly salt based, but the way it's used it won't come into contact with the guns at all...... so I'm not worried about that.

I've heard stories of people having issues with this rusting their guns, but to be fair they were either using it improperly by just putting the crystals in a sock or pouring them on to a shelf in the safe......or using the closet hanging type of product which has the crystals in a plastic bag which, if left unattended for too long will leak out on to the guns in the safe.

The premise is that this stuff is potassium chloride and some sort of carbonate or another that attracts water, then turns it into an oil like slurry as the crystals dissolve. The point is that after this happens you are to empty the receptacle and replace the crystals.

The one I bought is a tub, an sits at the bottom of the crate. Should work well.

At least in theory it will....

I use this inside my camper when storing for the winter. Works great.

Oh yeah, I use that in the crawl space, too.
Good find, sorry I didn't think of it.

I wonder how the ultra-cheap, ultra-non-nutritious instant white Uncle Ben's 5 minute rice would be at absorbing moisture.
One benefit is that it's availble at any 24 hour grocery store.

I think Horror Fright (Harbor Freight) sold it in about a 1lb container for use in a compressed air dryer. I never purchased any but was looking into it at one time.

Well... I put that Damp Rid in the crate, and now the humidity is jumping all over the place. 70%, then an hour later 60%, then 65% then back to 70% then back to 60%.......

Methinks my crate is a little less sealed than I once thought!

I'm going to have to hit it with some caulking at all the seams on the inside.

Could also be that you're pulling moisture out of the interior wood, moss, and leather...and it needs time to equalize.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Could be........

But it seems to bump up when the AC is on, which is blosing air right at the crate, and settle down while the AC is off. My guess is it's drafty.

Whichever one of us is right.... It wouldn't hurt to seal up that crate a bit., and clear caulk is cheap.

Strad, it seems like a lost cause. In my professional opinion you need to get rid of it and all contents. I'll come by later today to dispose of it if you'd like.

Yeah... that's got to be it.

I will see you later then. Bring a couple friends though, that crate weighs in at about 250lbs now.

Oh, and if you take the crate, you have to take the little dog, the kitten and at least one of the kids too.

And no, you don't get to choose which one.

Oh you have to get more out of this deal. Make him fetch all the laundry from the oldest boys room.
