Oh, are those big walls on the side of it new? You better be careful teaching your kid, he might actually get into shooting and start going through more than .22lr!
Stradawhovious wrote:I took the 9 year old to the range yesterday since he has been showing proper concerns for firearms safety and gun handling at home. We got him set up with my Remington Targetmaster (Model 41) and a brick of CCIs....... well, what was left of a brick anyways, there was about 300 rounds in it when we got to the range.
We set him up with some sandbags, made sure he could comfortably and safely hold the rifle and correctly work the action.....then let him loose. (well loose under adult supervision anyways....) The stock was a little long for him, but he handled it like a champ.
At first there were some issues with finding a sight picture, but after about 4 or 5 fliers (a few inches off of the target....), he was ringing a 3" spinner at 25 yards with virtually every shot. Then after a while I saw him ring the 3", then the 2" then the 1" in succession. He was very receptive to corrections and suggestions, and throughout the day his breathing, posture and trigger control got substantially better. He went from slapping the trigger to a gentle press. He went from not breathing until the shot breaks to having a light pause on the exhale when pressing the trigger. He was very focused, and very safe. He asked a lot of questions, and put the answers to practice which is something I see most adult shooters having problems doing.
He went through all 300 rounds.
Talk about being a proud Dad.
Next time I will bring more ammo........ and he will more than likely have his own rifle.
