No I do not carry a 1911. Don't carry right now. No permit.

I guess I will be spending a lot of time at bills over the next week.

i'm confused as to why you guys are saying that Glock is the first polymer framed pistol widely accepted.... did you forget about HECKLER & KOCH?

look at SINGLE STACK pistol. they hide better than a double stack

The keywords are "widely accepted".

How many even know what the H&K VP70 looks like?

The HK P9S was widely accepted (at least in Europe) but it had a "partial" polymer frame. Guess it depends on your definition of both "widely accepted" and "polymer frame." I suppose you could say that Glock had the first widely accepted pistol like Facebook and Myspace were the first widely accepted social networks. It's not 100% accurate, but it also makes sense. Glock definitely blew the lid off the concept, even if they weren't the first.

i don't know, maybe i'm just partial, but if Glock upstaged HK, then FN has upstaged Glock, by offering the FNP-9, 40 & 45, as well as the FNX-9 & 40. the FN has a SINGLE action/double action trigger (that has a great pull out of the box), with a "high capacity" double stack polymer frame. My FNP-40 holds 14+1, shoots straight, great trigger, LOOKS better than the Glocks, and is an all around great weapon. i'll take it any day over a Glock.

when FN sells as many pistols as Glock has, you can say they've upstaged Glocks in the "widely accepted" department.

As far as which is the better gun, we'll see which one has the reputation in 10, 25, 50 and 100 years. So far nobody competes with JMB in the longevity department. My guess would be that there will still be 1911 fans down the road, but the polymer world will continue to evolve. Nature of the beast, and the client base for each kind of gun. Some 1911 guys hate it when you Eff with their gun. Some polymer guys just can't wait to get the latest and greatest. Hence the XDm's, or all the generations of Glock, etc.

As far as which gun YOU like better, well that is totally irrelevant to this thread, although when 10 million + people (arbitrary number, just read "a hell of a lot") like the same gun as you do, you know you have a pretty good bet.

Dang it Hippy... Quit starting crap.

Okay... To the rest of you. I went with RUKWIKENUF to try on some different choices. A large number of you recommended that I try glock. I held a bunch of them today. I am going to keep an open mind. I haven't fired any of them yet. Just trying them on. Immediately I noticed that the angle of the grip seems awkward. The grip itself... Meh. The trigger, Not so much. The nice thing... It was light. Every one of them was nice and light.

Someone recommended that I try the M&P-9. I must admit... it was a nice pistol. Light weight, slim, trigger seemed good not great. There were only 2 things I didn't like about it. #1 was its a 9mm. #2 the backstrap seemed to have too high of an arch. If that makes any sense. I wasn't the only one who thought this.

Also finger banged a Sig P250. It was nice. But the grip seemed too thick.

also played around with a Sig 1911... All around ... Nice weapon. But a little big.

I have come to the conclussion that there is no perfect weapon for me. Well at least not that I have found yet. Its kind of a toss up now. Going to just go drop $100 on rentals and ammo.

Here are the pistols in no particular order.
Glock 21
S&W M&P 9
Sig 1911

I shall keep you posted.

the Glock was a Gen 3. i think it was a model 23?

the M&P did have a high grip arch, but we were at Fleet Farm and the kid behind the counter didn't know what the **** he was talking about

the Sig P250 WAS a great gun, one that I'd like to get, but we're on the search for a gun for MeatBall (Anokamanlikeslittleboys)

i want to get him into a commander size 1911, such as the Para LTC, but we'll see what happens

i think the issue is that he has choices. you can't give a dumb Marine a choice, he'll get confused and question his existence. however, i am proof that you can give an INTELLIGENT Marine (oxymoron, i know) choices, and they will find what suits them best. that's why Jarheads are ISSUED their weapons, not asked "which one do you want, Pvt Pyle?!?!"

Point two. Glock hand guns are like Camry's. Dead reliable, boring as hell, guns that fit no one but almost fit most people.

To me, they are the gun for the non gunner.

Yep. They do not win major shooting championships and no real gunner would want to use them for anything but plinking.

That's what I'm thinking. Remember when AIM Surplus (I think it was that company) had a ton of VP70 frames they were selling? Apparently someone uncovered a ton of never used, surplus VP70 frames somewhere and tried to unload them for cheap. I guess they'd be good if you had all the other parts to build a VP70, since I don't think they have much aftermarket support these days.

I also refer to the Glock as the first polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol that gained widespread popularity and acceptance.
