Glock 45- what to get

My Dad just won a Glock 9mm in a raffle. Im not sure which model or number or what. I don't know Glocks! He wants a 45 an is considering trading for a Glock 45 of some kind. He will only use it to carry when he hunts and at the range with me a few times. So I would like to know your thoughts on the models and which one if any you would suggest. Thanks for the help!

I would suggest keeping the 9mm... Glock makes one of the best/toughest/well designed 9mm in existence. You could pickup a Glock 21 pretty cheap if you're set on .45ACP. Or go over the 1911's.

21SF, get the full size with 13rd mags. The trigger reach is just a tad shorter than the standard 21 which helps if you don't have ginormous hands. It's my standard carry when a j-frame won't do.

Yeah if it's a G34 / G17L let me know and I'll be willing to trade you for pretty much any Glock .45.

1911 is great for deer hunting (that's what I use)...and it's more fun at the range. Using those two criteria you set it's a no brainer.

There is one thing you do NOT want to do if you get a 45 Glock, and that is buy one that is chambered in 45 GAP instead of 45 ACP. Some time ago Glock brought out this cartridge to try and get a 45 bullet coming out of a 9mm slide and frame, and the sum total of their cartridge design process was "Hey, let's make a 45 ACP case the length of a 9mm case!!" This lengthy design process was probably done by a marketer rather than anybody who knew anything about ammunition at all, which further compounded the awfulness of the whole thing. There was great hoopla when the 45 GAP was introduced, with lots of charts and graphs showing how it was just as powerful as the 45 ACP (almost.... ) and yadda yadda yadda.

Problem was, it was a proprietary cartridge that didn't do anything that the 45ACP couldn't, so ammo and brass were never very plentiful or easy to find. It has been dying on the vine for some time now, and the initial promise of getting a 45 slide on a 9mm frame never really panned out, and there were rumors of a few kabooms to sweeten the pot. Avoid the 45 GAP like the plague. Even a weird old pharte like me who reloads 41 Action Express and 440 Corbon Magnum wouldn't touch that cartridge with a 10 foot pole.

The unavailability of ammo and brass is very real. The reason for its development was to try and shoehorn a 45 caliber cartridge onto a 9mm frame in order to create a slightly smaller 45 is documented in some of the original gun reviews, and considering the absolutely huge array of subcompact 45's available out there, it pretty much makes the whole 45 GAP exercise futile, especially the part about having to to design a whole new cartridge to get a slightly smaller gun.

As far as the design, CCI/Speer may have done the loading, but it was some clueless marketer at Glock that selected the case length that just curiously wound up being EXACTLy the same as a 9 mm case. I mean, what are the chances that an optimized 45 GAP case would wind up being EXACTLY the same length as a 9mm case if the ballistics were worked out before the final case design was selected??

And yes, Starline 45 ACP brass new is $17.49/100 from Midway and it's in stock, and 45 GAP brass is $21.49/100 and it's curiously out of stock. That must be because of the staggering demand for that particular cartridge...
