Anyone want to test SD ammo?

Postby Paul on Tue Mar 30, 2010 11:23 am

Carry ammo selection is brought up from time to time, and everyone has different opinions on what's best. I was thinking it would be fun to get together and do our own tests of some self defense/carry ammo. I don't know the best way to go about it, but I'm sure some of you could come up with some good ideas.

I have a few different types of rounds on hand I could contribute. Off the top of my head I believe I have Speer Gold Dot in .40, Federal HST in .40, Winchester Ranger in .40, Federal Hydra Shok in 9 mm, Federal Hi Shok in 9 mm, and Federal HST in 9 mm. I also have some Federal 38+P nickel cased hollow points.

Any thoughts?

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Yeah, but if you get to use ballistics gel, it's more :ugeek: .

I've used water in the past, and I'm sure that Pat cannon has a couple thousand empty jugs I can use....

Well if Strad and I are both going to do it... That probably nails down the range as ICSC, if that makes a difference for anyone who may be interested.

I haven't counted them, or I forgot the number, but I've got a few dozen at least, which I've been saving for just such an occasion.

SWEET.

I can add to the list of SD ammo, but not as much. I can add .45 HST and 129gr hydrashok (designed for snub nose.)

Might not be bad to test other boolits as well........ FMJ, Plated, LSWC, LRN etc, etc, etc.

I'm thinking testing for factory ammo should include ME, AV, SD, as well as penetration, fragmentation and retention.

If there are any other suffestions for data that should be recorded feel free to speak up!

Agreed, might be fun to test other thing out too, for those like hammAR who like ball ammo... and EJSG19 who like air soft.

6mm is not to be trifled with.

Absolutely... It can cause minor skin irritation over time.

Anyone else have a couple bullets they would be willing to put towards the cause, or other ideas for targets? A chronograph would be nice if someone has one. I think Vlad might.
