Late season pheasant

Postby sochr000 on Wed Dec 30, 2009 12:25 am

So, just got back from Southwest MN after a two day pheasant hunt, we got one but crap did we have to work for it. The birds are really leery of anything, most flew before we got anywhere near them, but some sat so still I thought my dog was a little more retarded than usual  . The snow was horrible, anywhere from mid-calf to hip deep, and in the ditches it was well above hip deep in some places, and it all had a thick layer about 8" under the surface that was just hard enough for my dog to walk on, but not thick enough for us.

But, other than the miserable conditions it was fun, and I mean hey, I got a bird.

A couple of us plan to go out either Friday or Saturday. I have the snow shoes out and ready to go. Usually late in the season I wear snow shoes, but had the old style with the wood frame, webbing and shaped something like a tennis racket. Good for deep snow, but don't need that much flotation and they are very hard to go through any light brush at all. Got a pair from Cabelas, small, light aluminum frame and much easier to maneuver in. These are rated under my weight, but in that stuff that will hold a bird and your dog, these are more than enough to hold me up, a lot less jarring on the back.

Wait about a month, Cabelas should have some good prices and trying to move last years stock of their snow shoes.

+1 there. I'm addicted to Smartwool socks, and they are cheap there (relative to normal). Good place to check for lots of stuff.

I just got a shipment from STP yesterday. You can get free shipping by answering their buried trivia question. They bury a trivia question in an item description in each catalog. Rather than hunt them down, find the trivia question, and answers on the last few pages of this thread:

I made it out pheasant hunting around the farm a couple of times since the snow. After the first time out the snowshoes went on. I've got a pair of old wood frame alaskans, I like the flotation and they are narrow enough to get through some brush. Now just if I could find some for my lab, with her short legs she really gets a work out. Our Ridgeback has an easier time.

My DW needs a bigger set of shoes, I think I'll go visit STP, thanks for the tip on the shipping.
