I don't think you're giving the guy selling his gun enough credit. From what I've experienced, most gun owners are well aware that they're going to get much less selling to a shop. They choose to do so because it is fast, generally risk-free, and more convenient than listing it on Gunbroker or trying to find a private party to buy the gun.
