30-06 or 270? Ruger or CZ?

Postby rukwikenuf on Wed Sep 21, 2011 8:59 pm

i've been thinking of rifles, and my plans for an AR are going to have to sit on the back burner. i need something for deer. i also would like to have something that i could take to a range and shoot for some distance. no, i don't plan on competing, i just want to try my shot (literally) at a 400+ yard shot. i have narrowed my choices down to the Ruger M77 or the CZ550 American. i like the wood stocks, not synthetics, and i also really like the fact that they are both Mauser style actions

the second thing is caliber, there's the 30-06 (which is damn near a standard in MN for deer) and the .270 Win. i'm leaning toward the .270 mainly because i like being different, but also because i've heard and read many good things about this caliber. it is supposed to shoot very flat and quite accurate.

school me, oh wise ones! maybe there's another caliber you can think of?

simply for MN deer - 30-30 or 243 are enough to do the job just fine. no need to break the shoulder off.

i have a 30-06, and while it's awesome, if i had it to do over i'd go for a 270. shot 'em both, if it's just for deer the 270 is the winner IMHO.. splittin hairs pretty close though on those options.

for strictly MN/WI deer huntin, either is a great choice. can get away with les $$ for just woods deer slayer, but as i said before both are a great solid rifle that will last for years.

let us know how you come out :D

To answer your question: Ruger 270

I grew up in SD and like the .270 a lot. My buddy has a heavy barreled Ruger in 25-06 and it is the ideal gun for long range SD style hunting.

For a strictly MN gun I would consider pump or semi auto rifles. Do you have hunting property where you can shoot 400 yds? Most MN deer are shot at about 35 yards.

#1 son has used a CZ550 in 270 for years. Loves both the gun and the caliber.

The cz looks much sexier imho. i'd get one and as for the caliber, both are good, I just happen to like that 270 win costs a tiny bit less. Both will definitely take anything that lives in or crosses through mn.

Once again, a bit of cherry-picking ... but if ya wanna talk the talk, get a 7mm Rem. Mag. ... otherwise:

Hornady .270 Win 130gr Interlock - @400yd, 1,382 ft/lbs
Hornady 7mm-08 139gr GMX Superformance - @400yd, 1,478 ft/lbs

If it was me, I'd get the Tikka! Image

CZ with the single set trigger. Ruger is a good piece, CZ is much more interesting.

Speaking from my experience of working the range. There are some rifles, which seems to outshine others. This could be because, all the good shooters pick these rifles. Or, just that these are good rifles.

Sako, Savage accu trigger, CZ550, Thompson centerfire, Howa
Also, people seems to shoot 270 better than 3006.

thanks guys, i was leaning toward the Ruger M77 in .270.
as for the 7mm Rem Mag, no thanks. there's really no use for a Magnum in MN. the only Magnum i'll hunt with is my .357

no, i don't have land, but i have family with land. they challenge eachother to shooting matches, loser buys the beer later. THATS my competition plans

For deer? .270/CZ

For one North American Big Game rifle: '06/CZ

The '06 lets you shoot nice heavy bullets for bigger stuff if you need it. Then again, anything in North America has been killed with the .270.....

Plus, why have ONE rifle for hunting?!?!?!?!?
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

i'm not saying i only want one hunting rifle, i'm saying it's all i can afford at the moment. i'm an unemployed college student with a wife and three kids (one is 2 weeks old) and a mortgage. it's only gonna be one rifle FOR NOW! trust me, i'm working on an arsenal, but every gun nut started with one gun, right?

On a budget? Check out the firearms listings on here. I think there's a few awesome deals on nice rifles in there. Also, look at the Savage and Marlin offerings if you're on a budget. Remember glass and rings will set you back the price of the rifle or more.

Oh yeah, and if you're hell bent on one of the two above... CZ in 270.

Look into a 7mm-08. It's a great flat shooting round. It does well in the brush, and gives you the ability of a longer range shot.
