The biggest complaint heard about Pentax is eye relief.

At 2-$300 range, Leupold seems to have the best eye relief ..in a variable that is. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ ... stid=23451

Remember that bit about me not liking loopys
As for fixed power or variable, I really dont care too much, this is going to be a mn hunting gun. A 2x7x36 or 3x9x40 max or a nice 4x would be nice but either way i am not too plussed. It is MN and a long shot will probably be when i head south and have maybe a couple hundred yards. letsface it my eyes are not the best and the only reason i need to scope a rifle for my style of hunting is to have a big visual indicator on the top of the gun ( yes my eyesight is actually rather shat)as to which side is te top. that way i dont spend half the day wondering how to slam the mag home :D

The variables are nice to zoom in and spy on the other hunters.

I alwas thought you used the Binos to look at other hunters and the Scope for things you might shoot and quickly but carefully transitioned when you found you had the wrong tool for the situation ... but what do I know.

Monchie, The Pentax Lightseeker XL is an awesome hunting scope. I have one on my deer rifle (Browning BAR in 7 mm Rem Mag) and the glass is really nice, every bit as clear as my Monarch plus POI hasn't shifted a bit since I first sighted it in 6 years ago. I check it every year before deer season and a couple of shots is all I need to reassure me that it is still 1.5" high at 100 yds. There is cheaper out there but it is absolute peace of mind for me. If we make it to the range together again before deerhunting, you can shoot it all you want.
I have a Colt Python and you don't so what do I care...

For deer and larger game, I have gone to 1x4 variables. My longest shots are across a prairie reclamation where the deer are usually getting up from bedding and I have had no trouble making a 275 yard shot while still on 1.5 or so power. This also turns the scope into a giant peep sight for those quick running shots at the deer crossingthe little creek to my left.
