My new Beretta 1301 Comp came in.

Postby fabb600 on Tue Sep 10, 2013 8:10 pm

Just bought this for 3-gun. It's a bit smaller and a lot lighter (crazy light) than my other Beretta shotgun. I haven't shot a round through it yet, but the quality in and out is great and breaking it down is nice and simple like my xTrema which I really like.

My only beef right now is the loading port definitely needs more opening and smoothing. Do these manufacturers consult with any actual shooters before making these "3-gun" ready guns? I mean other than the loading port it's all great. I just don't get why they don't do it right for zero extra manufacturing cost when they have the chance. But I pretty much expected I would need to open the port up more so no problem in the end. Time to get out the Dremel!

Anyways here are a couple pics:

That loading port looks a lot wider than the stock one on my "competition" SLP so at least you've got a good start.

Now get to practicin' ya gamer!

I didn't realize the loading port needed more room... I knew about the lifter, but thought the opening of the port looked good... It's not, compared to your other one?

I just picked my 24" 1301 tonight as well, after hearing nothing but great things about them. Hopefully get out on Saturday, and put some rounds through it.

If you could, post some pictures after you do some work to the load port, I too wasn't as happy as I expected to be. But I'm impressed with every other aspect of it so far.

haha.. Believe me, if my software release goes smooth Saturday night I'll be at the match with the 5 Red bulls I'll need to stay awake!

Sure thing. I'm going to start working on it tonight. I'll try to do a "how to" with a couple video clips and pics. That would be kind of cool. My Beretta xTrema (which someone should go buy in the "for sale" section!) has the port work done and shells just slide into the port effortlessly on that thing. The other thing I'm going to do is smooth off the upper corner of that little shell stopper ("feed latch" ?) that keeps the shells in the tube from entering the receiver. There is no need for it to have a sharp corner on it and I tend to get a raw thumb from it throughout a long match or a lot of practicing.

But like Jonah said, at least with this model they've done most of the port metal removal and shaping for us and it's just a little finishing work that needs to be done so it should be pretty quick and easy.

That comment was directed at PureKTM. I know you are going to be there Sunday :)

I was actually thinking about shooting it, assuming I get my software upgrade done for work too. How late do they usually go till?

I shot some of slugs today. I had to hurry so I'm sure it could have done better, but I shot pretty nice groups at 50yds and 100yds. It definitely groups slugs tighter than my xTrema does by inches.

Also, I can see why most people seem to put on the butt stock extension. Without it your cheek comes up too far on the stock and you don't get a good level view down the barrel to the sights. I'm a smaller guy so I would think most people would have the same issue.

I finished a first run with the loading port last night and tried some loads through it. I still need to take off some more material tonight to get it right. Hopefully I get out of work Sunday in time to try it out at the Sunday FLSC match.

purektm - come to the match and you can compare your stock gun to what I've done and get an idea of what you like.

Your slug groups at 50 yards were real nice. I can't believe how light that gun is... effortless pointing. Too bad we didn't get to shoot any trap or pattern. I'm hoping you can make it out this weekend so I can see it run.

I bought 4 boxes of extra light trap load for the match. I'm really curious to see if they can shoot that without any issues.

This is on my list of guns to buy to test out. I have the A400 Unico with K/O stock and I want to put that stock on this gun to see if it will be a good option for shooters looking for very light and very low recoil.
But if my wife see one more shotgun in the house she might figure out they are not all the same nor can there possibly be specific purpose for all the different shotguns.

I'm going to create a separate topic for adding the Matchsaverz and touch on the port work too. The Matchavers install is a little hairy on the Beretta (not sure about other guns) so maybe my topic on that will help someone else.

Meanwhile, here are a couple pictures from the gun now. The only thing I'm needing at this point is the lifter welded. I'll have that soon, but it's good enough stock to get by without - just a little thumb pinching.

Port cut down and polished smooth. Also cut down leading edge of fore stock near loading port.
