How did I do on my first rifle purchase? (Model 94)

Postby Dylan on Mon Sep 02, 2013 3:06 pm

I've been wanting to find a decently priced Winchester Model 94 30-30 for some time now and finally came across one this morning. Based on the serial number (1780XXX), I've dated it to 1951. I paid $400 for the gun - $500 after Ammo and cleaning supplies. I feel that the gun, considering it's age, is in great condition. There are only a few minor dings on the stock and forestock. The bluing is a bit more worn on the receiver than the barrel. I put 15 rounds down range with no issues feeding or ejecting.

Here is an album of some pictures I took when I got home: http://imgur.com/a/1p8Kb

Mainly I'm just looking for some advice on caring for it, verification of the date, and if the price I paid is in the ballpark range for it's market value. In the end though I'm glad I was able to get my hands on an American classic, such as this.

Looks like a good gun for a pretty good price.

I don't know what going prices are but the gun is in nice shape.

You got a GREAT deal! Pre 64 Winchester model 94s in that good of shape are going for around $650 or better on Gunbroker. Usually the ones going for $400 are all rusty and banged up. Congratulations!

I agree.

Great find, Dylan!

Very nice looking gun for the money, http://www.youtube.com/user/downeastgunworks?feature=watch has a great video on the 94 if you want to get into it.

Thanks everyone! I can't wait to take it out shooting again, though it's not as cheap to shoot as my 9MM.

Thanks! This looks like a pretty informative video, should I ever have to take it apart. Hopefully not though.
