Wikileaks Diplomatic Dump

Postby gyrfalcon on Mon Nov 29, 2010 9:50 am

What are your thoughts on the information dumps by Wikileaks? I'm fine with information being released even if it is dirty laundry of the US Government...especially if Hillary has to deal with it. :) Some folks have tried to tie Wikileaks to Israel, but they seem to be fairly anti Semitic.

Hey, if you haven't done anything wrong, you should have nothing to hide, right?

Isn't that the way the argument is supposed to work when people talk about unlawful searches and seizures?

I agree with the thought, but the irony will be lost on the govt and it's army of bureaucrats.

I don't believe the same rights an liberties individuals have should be given to corporations and governments.

Based on what? The corporations, as long as they are American, are just extensions of the people. The govt was created by the people.

An extension can not be jailed or prosecuted like an individual can.

I agree.

I have no problems with the leaks. I'm all about open government. Everything they do *should* be exposed to the light of day. Maybe a 2 week delay on very critical stuff, but they represent us, and therefore should answer to us. They need to be held accountable for their actions, and if they know their actions will be exposed, maybe it'll result in less shenanigans.

I think corporations should be subject to a corporate death penalty if found guilty of capital crimes. Assets seized by the state and divided up among the victims.

In my humble opinion as a reader of history and former extremely minor member of the defense intelligence community, the vast majority of government secrets are already known to the people from whom they are intended to be kept, and 95% of them would do no harm to anybody if they were published on the Web in real time in conveniently indexed form. I'm pretty sure that there would be a significant net benefit to the U.S. and the world if 100% of everything my tax money pays for were so published.

I could see justification for occasionally placing a temporary hold (maybe 24 hours) on such data as the exact location of Jack Bauer. If he's real.

The leaks are just part of the game. I don't trust the govt but I think there are some things that would be better kept quiet. Pat, how do you feel about revealing the methods used to stop terrorists in real time? As long as a person is held accountable for actions taken on behalf of a corporation, I still don't see them as a whole lot different. If the right punishment involves the destruction or restructering of the corporation, I don't have a problem with that either. But, it generally doesn't happen that way. But, really, I do see a problem when you combine the worst of both worlds, like when big govt changes the rules for a big car company that results in a big union getting more than the law would have allowed at the expense of the rest of the people involved.

Who gets to judge? Are we just supposed to trust the government that the stuff they do keep secret is "really really important"?

Do you think that methods used by the CIA/FBI used to follow and catch some muslim extemists after 9/11 should have been immediately made public information?

Existing technology just about makes that all true already. As a nation and as individuals, we're going to have to learn how to live in a world where there are no secrets.

I understand that technology works both for and against you. But we don't have to spoon feed them. Not everybody knows everything all the time.
