California city passes first gun law requiring annual fees, liability insurance

A California city has passed the first-of-its-kind gun law that will require gun owners to purchase liability insurance and pay an annual fee on their weapons.

San Jose city council members voted to approve the new law, which requires gun owners to pay about $25 a year as well as administrative costs to the city. Gun owners also must pay for liability insurance, which covers losses or damages resulting from "any negligent or accidental use of the firearm," within six months of acquiring a weapon.

Around 50,000 to 55,000 households in the city own guns, meaning the city can expect to make about $1.3 million on the new fees, according to the San Jose Spotlight.

$1 mil should be nothing for a city of that size, so I doubt it is revenue they want

And of course it's already being challenged.

Wait, I can get insurance so I am not liable for any negligence with a firearm?

The only thing this will do, maybe, is slow down the straw purchases. With a 48 hour time frame for reporting a lost or stolen firearm, you ether report it stolen the next day or you keep the box it came in on the top shelf of the closet. Gee officer the gun is in its box on the top shelf of my closet. Damn that box is empty, crap. Officer my gun has been stolen.

Eventually as in a SCOTUS ruling, and then the US Marshals threatening to place California's Governor and State Attorney General under arrest. Not anytime sooner.

I believe SCOTUS will have a say, eventually. This scheme had been tossed around for a while waiting for the first city to raise their hand. No surprise it is CA

That would take more intestinal fortitude than they have.
