Gun happy and often shoots at objects in his yard.

Is he living in town? If out in the country I can't see a problem at shooting at stuff on your yard.

On the other hand why did he keep them in his basement for at least 10 hrs?

Likely, he was trying to come up with a story that would keep him out of prison...Can't wait to read what they have to say at the press conference tomorrow.

Or maybe he had other stuff to get rid of before he made the call.

It was the next day that he called. So he kills these kids, waits till the next day and then calls? Check his yard for other bodies.

Very interesting.

He should of called the police right off.
Right or wrong he is going to have the book thrown at him.
With the info from the story, if the kids were breaking in they paid the price. Possibly it was dark. He was startled, and came out blasting. After realizing the victims and the extent he freaked out and didn't know what to do so sat on it?

Or he's a sadistic person and let them suffer and die from their injuries.

Either he has very poor judgement or he is looney toons. The 24 hours will damn him, but if he had called right off who could really fault him for protecting himself from a home intruder? Do we all have time to interview the home intruders we have breaking in at odd hours of the night? His neighbors called him a gun nut and that he practiced shooting stuff? That is likely half the people on this forum.

Sympathy for the dead and empathy for the shooter until more facts are known.

I saw on the late Channel 11 news last night that police responded to a "suspicious activity call" phoned in by a neighbor, and when questioned the guy admitted he had 2 dead bodies in the basement. So according to that report, the shooter never called the police at all - and only admitted to the shoot after police questioned him (and likely wanted to search his house).

Right now all I can say is this guy's actions after the shoot were about the worst thing you can possibly do. I will reserve judgement on whether it was a good shoot or not until we get more details (supposedly coming after he is arraigned today).

A criminal complaint says Smith told investigators he shot Schaeffel when the teen had partially descended the stairs, then fired again into the teen's face as he lay on the floor looking at him.

"I want him dead," the complaint quoted Smith telling an investigator.

He then described sitting down again in his chair, and in a few minutes, the second teen -- Kifer -- began walking down the steps. Smith said he shot her and she also fell down the stairs. He said he tried to shoot her again, and when his Mini 14 rifle jammed, she laughed at him.

Smith told investigators that made him mad: "If you're trying to shoot somebody and they laugh at you, you go again," he said, according to the complaint.

Smith said he then pulled out a .22-caliber revolver he was wearing and shot Kifer several times in the chest. He fired a final shot under her chin because she was still gasping for air a few minutes later, he said.

Wow. Wow. Based on that, I'd say he did society a favor and removed THREE people from the general populace that needed to be removed. Two aspiring criminals and one old man who just wasn't right in the head any more.
