The real answer is nuclear. 4 ounces of thorium or uranium (about a 1" diameter ball bearing) is enough for all the energy one typical American needs in a lifetime. These are not rare metals, 4 ounces could be found in 10 tons of ordinary rock. Or 30,000 cubic yards of seawater. A single mine in Idaho has enough high quality ore for the whole US's energy needs for a century.

The tech needed has been known since the 60's.

Heating easily. Gasoline and diesel just pack so much energy in a convenient to handle package that it's tough to find something that is equivalent. There are natural gas vehicles out there that work fine, but CNG has its own issues. The Chevy Volt is really going to be the model going forward, or if you have some sort of aversion to saying anything green or from GM is good, think diesel subs. Battery power, with gas/diesel engines to extend range.

If we had the nuke infrastructure we could have had by not getting sidetracked by "nukes are bad herpa-derpa" talk, we'd be that much further ahead of the game. Of course, we still have to wait for battery/electrical technology to catch up to where the internal combustion engine is today, but... yeah. There are many roads to get there and off of fossil fuels. And when we do, it'll help our national security posture TONS.

If the infrastructure was there, ie the power grid, an electric car in every garage would be utopia.

I'm pretty sure electricity is run to pretty much every corner of America. But that's beside the point. The solution is multi-faceted. Drive trains like the Volt are perfect stepping stones to the infrastructure you are talking about, and a good way to get off our dependence on foreign oil while maintaining our own reserves. Yes, it will take decades to be able to go full electric, but that doesn't mean we don't take the first steps today. People who want to buy one (and driving habits support it) can. And it will lower the costs for everyone else later.

So don't buy an electric car if it doesn't suit you. But that doesn't mean electric cars are bad ideas. It just means it's a bad idea for you.

yes but the us is selling a uranium mine in Wy to the russians (NRC approves sale) so were going to be short on uranium.
