Need some advice on this gasblock.. SOLVED THANKS !

Postby bluto on Mon Jun 24, 2013 11:12 am

I am trying to get this gasblock off so I can remove the handguard and the previous owner has some half assed setup with a lanyard adapter on it and it is blocking the bottom set screw, but I think it is far enough out that this block should slide off but no dice and being new to the AR-15 I do not want to damage this any more than he already has. :(

Sorry if this is a silly question but do I just yank it off or ?

You can see where the lanyard adapter ( can't think of the proper term for this piece right now.. ) is rubbing - grinding against the screw, I have only did 4-5 turns on it to get it out and then it's blocked and the adapter does not have a screw it is a rivet.

Thanks.

Drill the rivet out, and pound it out. Then remove the sling point.

Some folks actually bed their gas blocks. A botched bedding job = epoxied on. If you haven't tried already, heat the block with a heat gun and give it another try.

Set screws are infamous for leaving raised-edge dimples where they bit into the barrel. When I've run into that, the only way out was to grit your teeth and muscle it past the dimpled area.

That is not what I want to hear hoot ....

I would give a finger for a bench and vice / stand right now, already lost one set screw.

EDIT : Got it !

Now the handguard just screws off, right ?

They can really stick sometimes. Take it slow with a hammer and large brass punch and it should come loose without too much of a fight. Before you put the new gas block on you can use some emery cloth to remove the corrosion or find any high spots and fix it. If you end up with bare metal. I've have good luck with using synthetic gear lube on gas block to keep them from seizing on to the barrel.

I didn't realize you were stuck with an armstrong setup. Definitely adds to the aggravation. It's not as dire as it sounds. If the block is hanging up on burrs, it only scratches the underside of the block. Kind of like the underside of your scatter rug having a stain. ;)

Rocking it back and forth may abrade the burr and allow it to be removed over time.

That's how I did it, rocked it left and right a bit and gave it a good yank, I think I am getting a better block and a railed guard before I put it back together.
