Rabbit hunting this morning

Postby photogpat on Sat Dec 29, 2012 12:28 pm

Went out up near Longville this morning for rabbits. Saw one, didn't get a shot (snowshoe hare, tough to track white on white) -- but it was such a nice day to out in the woods I didn't really mind. I found a fresh deer kill, enjoyed the new snow on the trees, and managed a 45 minute stop to test out the winter survival kit complete with fire and hot cocoa, plus a couple milk bones for my hunting companion.

All in all...a nice couple of hours in the winter woods. Just wanted to share that with you guys. Hope everyone had a good Christmas (or other major/minor holiday) and has a Happy New Year as well!

Sounds like a blast. Just getting out in the woods is always worth it.

HammeredSquirrel and I also went out for some rabbits this morning. We went down near the Hastings area off the vermillion river. Saw tons of tracks but never saw one to get a shot off. Great day for a walk through the woods.

We gave up on hunting and now we're out on a lake trying to find some blue gills.

The carcass was pretty far back in...and looked probably about a week old. With the wolf tracks all around, I figured it was wolves. My lab was all hackles and growls anywhere in the general vicinity of it with all the scent markings.

Your fish is quite a bit nicer.

Ya don't catch bass much in the winter, so figured I would share. Pulled in 5 green carp today, the one pictured is the smallest of the bunch. Lower Prior Lake.

Ended up getting a small cottontail late this afternoon -- got it with the .22 as it sat in my parents' woodpile at their cabin...go figure. No pictures as it was so fricken cold my phone wasn't working.

This was my first rabbit ever....they're amazingly easy to skin and clean....I couldn't believe it, pretty much jumped out of its skin (no pun intended). I had seen this YouTube video for pointers ahead of time....and he's got it DOWN!!

So, onto the next...anyone got any rabbit stew recipes to share? I'd like something I can do in the dutch oven out in the backyard. I've got some Chipotles I smoked this past summer I'd like to incorporate into it -- and of course, some bacon....hmmmm.....

Grind it with fresh garlic. Saute the meatballs in olive oil, over pasta. Yummy.

Hmmm...I do like making meatballs...this isn't too much different than my venison meatball recipe...except I add mustard powder and cayenne.
